The Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever Give

The Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever GiveThe Worst Job Interview Answers You Could Ever GiveThere are many different ways to blow a job bewerbungsinterview and turn off an employer. Subpar responses to interview questions reveal flaws in your attitude, preparation, interest in the job, or qualifications to get the work done well. They may also reflect negatively on your work ethic or your ability to work well with others. Here are a few examples of the worst types of answers to interview questions, along with tips on what you can say instead to impress the interviewer. Why Should We Hire You? schwimmbad answers I dont know. It sounds like a good job. Saying you dont know or giving a vague answer is never a good way to respond to any interview question. If you need to, take a little time to think about an answer before you respond. Instead, respond to the question Why should we hire you? with an answer that illustrates how your qualifications and strengths fit the job, a long with some anecdotes to illustrate your qualifications. Tell Me About Your Last Job Bad answer Didnt you look at my resume? A snide Didnt you look at my resume? is not the way to answer questions about your employment history. Be prepared to discuss your previous jobs with the interviewer, and review your resume ahead of time so you know where you worked when. What Did You Like Least About Your Previous Position? Bad answer I hated the job and the company. They were awful to work for. Its important not to badmouth the companies or people you worked for because you dont know what relationships they may have with the company youre interviewing with. I once had an applicant who told me that her employer was the worst place to work ever. That employer happened to be our biggest and most important customer. Its always a good strategy to focus on the positives when discussing your previous job, including how you grew from your experiences. What Are Your Strengths? Bad answ ers I do good work. Im the best. Im not aya, but Im a good learner. Vague answers dont go over well. The interviewer wants to know what strengths you have that specifically relate to the job you are being considered for. When answering questions about your strengths, talk about the skills you have as they relate to the job, rather than giving general answers. Can You Share a Weakness? Bad answers I cant think of any right now. I tend to lose my patience with incompetent people. You always need to be prepared to share a weakness so you can demonstrate that you are committed to professional growth and have some self-insight. Make sure any weakness does not create serious doubt about your willingness or ability to carry out the central functions of the job at hand. When asked about weaknesses, its a good idea to frame your answer around skills youve improved upon. Why Were You Fired? Bad answers I failed that drug test. I missed too much work. Be very careful when you answer questions about being fired. Keep what you say about being fired as brief as possible. You could talk about how being cut loose was a blessing, or how you and your employer came to a mutual understanding. Why Have You Decided to Apply for This Position? Bad answers I was looking through the job ads and it seemed interesting. I was getting bored with my current job. Rather than such vague answers, a better approach would be to cite specific reasons why the job is appealing and fits in with your overall career aspirations. When asked why you want a job, you should show that you have researched the company and prove that you are a good fit for the job. Where Do You See Yourself 5 Years From Now? Bad answers In your job. I hate that question. Most of us do hate this question, but a better answer to where you see yourself in five years is to speak about what you would like to learn and accomplish during that time, with an emphasis on excelling in the job for which you are inter viewing. Try to research a career path flowing from the job for which you are interviewing and reference a realistic goal for your progress. It is also acceptable to ask the interviewer for some common positions to which one might progress if one is successful in the initial position and then use that information to help frame your answer. Do You Work Well With Others? Bad answers My co-workers didnt like me, but I think it was because they were intimidated by me. I get along with most people, but others really aggravate me. Rather than bad mouthing your co-workers, its important to let the interviewer know that you get along well with everyone at work. Companies dont want to hire difficult employees, and if you let them know during the interview that you arent easy to get along with, you probably wont get the job. Why Should We Hire You? Bad answers Im the best one for the job. I am great with people and a hard worker. Rather than being so vague, when faced with the questi on of why you should be hired, be ready to mention six assets that will help you to succeed in the job. Be ready to reference examples of how you have applied those strengths to add value in various work, school or volunteer scenarios. Tell Me About Yourself Bad answer Im a huge fan of the Yankees and avid softball player with the gift of gab Im usually the life of the party. Generally, you will be better off by using this opening to mention some of your professionally oriented attributes that will help you get the job done. You can add one or two personal items at the end to round things out. For example, if you were applying for a job as a recruiter you might say something like, I am a good listener and a skilled interviewer who can usually read people well. Or At ABC company, the retention rate of my hires was 20 percent above the department average. I have taken up golf and love it but am struggling to shoot less than 100. Tell Me How You Were Able to Expand Sales by 25 Percent? Bad answer Its hard to say, but Im a great salesman. Make sure you can back up any assertions on your resume with some concrete details. In this example, you might cite your traits as a successful salesperson and/or specific techniques/strategies that you employed to generate sales. Do You Have Any Questions for Me? Bad answers Do I have to work overtime? I dont have any questions. How much vacation will I get? How much is the employee discount? When the tables are turned, always prepare some questions that relate to the job itself and the role you will play, training you will receive, career paths, or other professional concerns. Questions about vacation time and benefits can wait until after you have been offered a position.

16 Web Developer Interview Questions to Ask16 Web Developer Interview Questions to AskHiring a web developer can be tough in todays employment market. Talented professionals are in high demand, and its difficult to find people with the right technical skill set and work experience. It can be tempting to overlook a candidates interpersonal abilities. However, these qualities can actually determine whether someone flourishes or flounders on the job.Of the managers polled for a recent Technology survey, 95 percent admitted theyve made a bad hire in the past. Of those, 38 percent said the problem was due to the individuals lack of technical skills. But more interestingly, 57 percent blamed it on personal attributes. A further breakdown Twenty-nine percent said there were interpersonal issues with those failed hires - either their soft skills werent up to par, or they caused conflict with colleagues or customers. And 28 percent said the problem had to do with a mismatch with the corporat e culture they simply werent a good fit for the company or work environment. To avoid the high costs of a bad hire, you may want to reexamine how you vet job candidates. Here are 16 of the best web developer einstellungsgesprch questions.1. Can you tell me briefly about some projects youve worked on and the approach you took from start to finish? This is a good web developer interview question to start with because you can learn about their work style - how they gather requirements, solve problems, manage user feedback, handle QA and collaborate in a team setting. Their response will also show you their level of enthusiasm for web development.2. Pretend Im a tech novice. Can you explain what ________ is in plain English?Your newly hired web developer will likely work closely with other departments, which means theyll need to communicate effectively with their non-techie colleagues in marketing, sales, editorial, accounting and human resources. Ask candidates to expound on a topic all web developers should be familiar with, and look for their ability to speak using non-jargony terms. Here are some concepts to choose from CSS, PHP, plug-ins, responsive design, W3C, version control or microtafelgeschirr architecture. You could also ask them to compare and contrast related terms, such as UI vs. UX or front end vs. back end, for a lay audience.3. Have you ever given a presentation?IT plays a strategic role in many companies, so public speaking is a good skill to have in a web developer. Youll want to hire someone who has presented in front of their team. Bonus points to those whove given presentations to large non-IT groups. Follow up with questions on how they gathered and organized information, and what they did to keep the audiences attention.4. What is personennamespacing in JavaScript? This is a basic JavaScript question that should be easy for experienced web developers to answer. In brief, a namespace is a global object with a unique name that holds methods, p roperties and other objects. Its used to increase modularity and reuse of code in web applications, and to prevent naming conflicts.Hiring web developers? We can helpREQUEST TALENT5. Whats the difference between SOAP and REST?These are two web service protocols that developers should know. One of the key differences is that SOAP uses XML while REST also supports text, JSON and other formats. Web developers may have strong opinions about which one is better, but they should demonstrate an understanding of both.6. List some of the input types that are new to HTML5.HTML5 has been around for several years now, so a good candidate should be able to name at least a few of the following color, date, datetime-local, email, month, number range, search, tel, time, url, week.7. Which CMSs have you worked with? Some common open-source content management systems (CMSs) are WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. To elicit more information, ask if theyre involved in the relevant open-source communities and whether theyve ever made any contributions.8. How are your SQL skills?Database expertise may not be listed in the job requirements, but most web developers will need to work with SQL Server or MySQL during the course of their duties. Any practical experience, such as having worked as a database administrator, is highly valuable.9. Who is your role model in the world of tech?Do they admire innovators? Talented engineers? Great designers? Entrepreneurs whove made billions? People who do good in the world? The answer to this question can tell you much about what the web developer values, which is another data point in whether theyd be a good or poor fit for your company culture.10. Name a website or app that annoys you. Whats wrong with it?This web developer interview question asks about the candidates awareness of current issues in web development, as well as their own problem-solving abilities. A good answer is one where they do more than just gripe about someone elses work. Skilled web developers will offer real solutions to practical issues, such as how to improve load times or optimize the user experience.11. Do you have any projects that you work on (or have worked on) in your spare time?Web technology moves fast. Even if your company provides extensive skills development training, top developers spend a significant chunk of their own time tinkering and staying on top of emerging trends. Candidates should be able to discuss their personal projects, either past or present, and possibly even show you their work.12. What do you do when an application stops working?Problem solving is at the heart of web development, so listen to how the candidate talks about fixing things that goes awry. Do they break down the situation and analyze potential causes? Do they know when to ask for help and where to go to find answers? How do they respond if their first idea for a solution doesnt pan out?13. Tell me about a time youve had to respond to negative feedback.Web develop ers have to deal with a barrage of comments from beta testers and actual users. The ideal candidate for this position needs to know how to take that feedback, analyze it and turn it into action. Listen to how they walk through the issue and arrive at a conclusion.14. Have you ever been blamed for something that wasnt your fault? This is a challenging question, but its a good way of gauging the candidates attitude toward teamwork. If interviewees are quick to throw people under the bus, they likely will make for a terrible colleague. You want to hire a developer who doesnt get angry quickly and who will work toward a solution - and hopefully clear their name in the process.15. Can you find the error in this code? Its common practice to ask candidates to write code by hand during an interview, which isnt an ideal setting. Plus, unless youre a coder yourself, you wont know whether theyve done it properly. An alternative is to print out a piece of code - some JavaScript will do - with strategically placed errors and ask interviewees to find them. This is a quick way to establish both technical knowledge and their attention to detail.16. Which perks of this job are you most excited about? This is a chance to find out a little more about the person youre interviewing and their work-life balance. Maybe they really want that free gym membership to help stay in shape, or perhaps the flexible hours will help them juggle personal and work responsibilities. This is also a good opportunity to sell the company as a top employer. Perks can sway a candidate who has received several job offers, and this question allows you to follow up with all the advantages of joining your organization.Asking these 16 web developer interview questions should help you narrow down your list of candidates to those who will most likely be the best technical and cultural fit for your team.

ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch Future Engineers Program

ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch Future Engineers Program ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch Future Engineers Program ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch Future Engineers ProgramThe ASME Foundation has partnered with NASA on a new program that will give K-12 students the chance to konzept items that could ultimately be manufactured on the International Space Station. Through the new program, Future Engineers, the space agency and the Foundation will develop a series of 3D design challenges and curricula intended to inspire students to solve real-world exploration challenges. For the programs inaugural challenge, which launches in September, students will be asked to create 3D models specifically designed to be used in space. The winning design will be uplinked to a 3D printer on the International Space Station where the astronauts will print the part. In addition, the winning student will be invited to NASAs Payload Operations Center in Huntsville, Ala., to watch live as his or her i tem is printed in space. Announced last month at the White House Maker Faire, the Future Engineers project was conceived by a small team that included Deanne Bell, a mechanical engineer, ASME member and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) advocate. Bell, a member of the ASME Foundations Board of Directors, came up with the idea for the competition after watching an online video about the 3D Printing in Zero G Experiment, a joint venture between NASA and Made in Space Inc. to launch 3D printing equipment that can operate in microgravity on the space station. Bell then approached Made in Space and Niki Werkheiser, NASA 3D Printing in Zero-G project manager, with her concept. Niki embraced my half-formed idea for a single challenge and helped me build it into the Future Engineers inaugural program - a multi-year series of 3D space challenges in collaboration with NASA and the ASME Foundation, Bell said. As an ASME member myself, I know that ASME has perhaps the largest n etwork of advanced manufacturing and 3D design experts in the world. It seemed like the perfect fit for a program aimed to teach students how to 3D model their ideas within the context of space manufacturing. The ASME Foundation proved to be a perfect choice, and their enthusiasm for the program was evident from day one. NASA and the ASME Foundation struck a partnership and Im honored to be working with two of the most respected organizations in the world to inspire young minds. ASME member Deanne Bell, one of the team members who developed the Future Engineers K-12 program.Werkheiser, Bells Future Engineers collaborator, underscored the importance of encouraging young peoples interest in STEM and aerospace technology in particular. The students of today are the space travelers of tomorrow, she said. It is not someone working at NASA today that will first set foot on Mars. It is a student out there now who is excited about the science fair or designing new Lego creations or practic ing for an upcoming math team competition. I cant fathom a better skill to have than to be able to wake up one morning imagining a new tool or part that you need and having the tools at hand to design it on your laptop, print it, and be using it by lunchtimeA Zero-G Technology 3D demonstration printer will launch to the station in early fall and will be the first printer to fly in space. It will produce an initial run of space station parts and tools to be tested, as well as print the Future Engineers competitions winning design. A permanent 3D printer, known as the Additive Manufacturing Facility, is in development and is expected to be installed on the ISS in the future. Made in Spaces Jason Dunn and Mike Snyder assemble the 3D printer in their cleanroom.Bell noted that the ultimate goal of the program is to connect Future Engineers challenges and curriculum with educators, museums, after-school programs, and maker-capable facilities in local communities. Its a large endeavor, a nd the ASME Foundation will need further sponsors and supporters to fully realize these goals, she said. If you are interested in becoming an advocate for the program in your community or just want to stay in the know, sign up for our mailing list at www.futureengineers.org. The ASME Foundation funds and develops a variety of programs that support and advance the field of engineering. Individuals or companies who would like to support the Future Engineers program financially should contact Dora Nagy at the ASME Foundation by e-mail at nagydasme.org. To learn more about the Foundation, visit www.asme.org/about-asme/get-involved/asme-foundation. Niki Werkheiser, NASA 3D Printing in Zero-G project manager, worked with Deanne Bell on the creation of the Future Engineers program.

Blackwater Becomes a Sparkling Resource

Blackwater Becomes a Sparkling Resource Blackwater Becomes a Sparkling Resource Water has been an abundant and cheap resource throughout the United States, even in the arid West where great landmark 20th Century civil works projects produced Hoover and Glen Canyon dams that impounded large reservoirs and fueled urban growth. Now, changing weather patterns, drought and increased treatment and production costs have engineers, urban planners, politicians, and developers rethinking water use. Increasingly they are championing water reuse, using maturing technology to recycle blackwaterraw sewageto graywater, water that is treated to standards clean enough to be used in buildings cooling towers, toilet flushing or irrigation. As sustainable design develops, building owners are looking to small-scale systems built within the buildings foundation to recycle wastewater rather than discharge into municipal sewers. To ensure there is enough volume to meet the buildings nonpotable needs, some ar e even tapping into sewers. Sewer mining provides enough flow to keep the system working efficiently and has the added benefit of reducing the overall load to the municipal treatment plant.Membranes are fitted in carousels to filter out solids, pathogens and viruses in wastewater stream. These systems cost a premium, but are being driven by increasing demand for LEED-certified buildings. LEEDLeadership in Energy and Environmental Designis a system that rates green-building design, construction, and operations. Water recycling provides one of the largestnumber of points for one system in meeting that goal, according to the U.S. Green Building Council, which administers the program.Theres a number of these projects throughout the United States and its going to grow, says Barry Liner, director of the Water Environment Federations Water, Science Engineering Center in Alexandria, VA. They have the potential for a lot of different benefits.Saving WaterWater conservation is one of the majo r benefits. In Australia, where a lengthy nationwide drought has officials scrambling for solutions, developers of Sydneys 1 Bligh St. high-rise fitted the building with a 35,000-gallon-per-day blackwater recycling system that draws raw sewage from the building as well as city sewers. Its modified membrane bioreactor (MBR) provides primary and secondary treatment, and reverse-osmosis membranes and ultraviolet light disinfect to a level that allows the effluetto be recycled back to the buildings cooling system as well as for flushing toilets and other nonpotable uses.Australias 1 Blight St. high-rise mines the sewer to supplement wastewater that is treated and used throughout the building.Designers tapped the sewers to supplement the buildings blackwater volume to meet its nonpotable demands. The yield on the system is pretty high, says fruchtfleisch Meredith, national product manager in the U.S. for AquaCell, the Australian firm that supplied the system. The payback is pretty attrac tive with or without sewer mining. A modified MBR system has a yield of 99%.In the U.S. there are a number of installations recycling wastewater, from sizes in the thousands of gallons per day to the 15- million-gallon-per-day Fulton County plant near Atlanta. Most use bioreactors and membranes to purify water but there are passive systems that filter water through engineered wetlands to achieve the goal. The headquarters building for the Port of Portland (OR) installed a 5,000-gpd passive system as part of its LEED-Platinum-certified building in 2010.Manufacturers began selling membrane bioreactors in the mid-1980s, mostly to commercial buildings such as high-rises or stadiums. They are about five to ten percent more expensive, says Paul Schuler, region executive for GE Water in North America. But there are benefits a tiny footprint and computerized controls.Manhattan ExampleNew York Citys Solaire high-rise condominium is billed as the first green residential high-rise in the U.S. and is fitted with a 25,000-gpd water recycling system using GEs ZeeWeed MBR. The system is located in the basement and provides 9,000 gpd of water to flush toilets, 11,500 gpd for cooling tower water and another 6,000 gpd for landscape irrigation, according to WEF. Designers claim the system reduces potable water usage by 48% and wastewater discharge by 56%.Solaire high-rise residential building in New York is fitted with blackwater recycling system to supply graywater for buildings nonpotable needs. While these systems illustrate the degree to which wastewater can be treated and reused, a recent report from the National Research Council highlights water recycling that largely goes unnoticed. Every day in the U.S., 32 billion gallons of wastewater is treated and discharged, mostly to rivers and streams where it mixes and flows downstream to be collected, used, treated and discharged again. Of that, 12 billion gallons is released to oceans and estuaries, essentially becoming a lost r esource, according to the report. As the nations bevlkerung increases, the report calls for capturing those discharges and using advanced technology to treat it not only for irrigation and other industrial or agricultural uses, but for drinking water. In California, Orange Countys water district is using membrane technology to treat wastewater to drinking water standards and replenish its supply aquifer. The treated wastewater is injected to the ground, where it percolates down the aquifer. Besides replenishing the aquifer, the additional volume protects the supply from saline incursion. For now, most systems will continue to convert blackwater to graywater. Theres still the issue of public acceptance, says Schuler, who says architects are always keen on designing buildings with systems that can convert drinking water from wastewater. Theyre thinking like architects, he says. Theres still the public to deal with.A modified MBR system has a yield of 99%.Mark Meredith, AquaCell
